Planning Enforcement Officer
Planning enforcement officers are members of the planning support staff team and work closely with them to help provide administrative and technical support across a wide range of areas. He or she must have at least some prior knowledge of planning administration and related laws and would reflect an enthusiasm to learn the intricacies of the process.
Typical day-to-day activities include performing various site visits to a range of locations across the UK (he or she would therefore hold a full UK drivers license); dealing with cases whereby planning permission has been breached and forming and/or negotiating workable solutions around the problem; ensuring that new property has followed the correct channels of planning permission, has been granted it, and is following the planning requirements correctly;carrying out detailed investigations into breaching of licensing law of any variation; presenting findings and reports to the relevant planning committee; and providing guidance and information tohomeowners, builders or anyone else who wishes to develop property, using his or her acquired knowledge of the planning system.
A successful candidate would ideally be a technical member of the Royal Town Planning Institute. To gain membership, they would hold a relevant qualification, such as an NVQ Level 3 in town planning support or an HND/HNC in planning, and at least two years experience in a closely related field. However, an employer may support your decision to work towards gaining membership during your employment. Knowledge and experience of planning enforcement law is an essential pre-requirement.
Qualifications: NVQ in town planning support (or equivalent) and membership of the RTPI would be preferable, but not essential.
Experience: At least two years in a related enforcement or planning role.
Skills: Presentational, written and verbal communicational skills, knowledge of licensing laws, people skills, investigation skills.
