Work With Offenders - The Choices

Development Control Planner

Development control planners work within a district council and deal with areas such as property and housing planning, advertisement, estate management approvals, advertising, listed building and conservation area consent applications. They regularly liaise with customers wanting to develop their property and provide advice and information regarding issues relating to this as well as conferring their extensive field knowledge, previous experiences and utilising relevant industry contacts.

Position holders are therefore expected to have strong people skills as one-to-one support is a major feature of the role. They should also have strong written, IT, and verbal communication skills as presentations are a regular requirement. Knowledge and experience of inquiry and planning appeals (from allocated individual cases) would be a great advantage to prospective candidates.

Additional duties for development control planners include assisting enforcement officers in cases of planning control breaches, which involves carrying out an investigation and resolution enforcement. A degree in town planning would be highly relevant, but a related area or qualification would be helpful and must have a prior basic understanding of relevant enforcement law.

A successful candidate would have at least two years’ experience in a relevant work-field. Experience of development control within a local authority would be favourable, though it is not an obligatory requirement. On top of this, the position holder would have strong one-to-one people skills and an approachable phone manner.

Qualifications: Undergraduate degree in a related discipline such as Geography or Environmental Science.

Experience: At least two years’ experience in a relevant work-field. Experience of Development Control within a Local Authority would be favourable, though not obligatory.

Skills: People skills, IT, written and verbal communication skills.
