Work With Offenders - The Choices

Noise Nuisance Officer

Noise nuisance officers typically support a local authority’s neighbourhood team and deal with allegations of anti-social behaviour and noise disruption in the community. They work as part of investigations of complaints made by local residents, and report to the senior nuisance investigation officer. They operate in both the private and public sectors and adhere to the stipulations of the Noise Act 1996, the Housing Act 1996, and the Environmental Protection Act of 1990.

They regularly liaise with officers from other departments within the Council and work to build on existing relationships with other relevant departments and agencies. They include local health authorities, the police and the social services. Nuisance officers are expected to network and build a long list of helpful contacts in the field as a variety of local authority departments will come as useful contacts.

The position holder will be flexible in terms of working hours as some evening and weekend work may be required. They will hold a full UK drivers’ license and will have access to a vehicle for daily use as travelling to various areas of the UK is often necessary. Successful candidates will hold a number of relevant A-levels in related qualifications. It is required that they hold certificates in environmental health or housing management or a related vocational qualification.

In terms of previous experience, work within the environmental, community safety, enforcement or regulatory spheres is obligatory. Additionally, experience of working within an investigatory working environment would be desirable and highly relevant. Candidates would also have a working knowledge of the ins and outs of the Environmental Protection and/or Housing Acts.
