Work With Offenders - The Choices

Regulatory Lawyer

A regulatory lawyer for a company or organisation works to review, improve or change its compliance procedures as a means of protecting them from scrutiny or prosecution by criminal investigators. They work closely with regulatory bodies and keep abreast of changes in compliance laws. Lawyers also assist individuals concerned that they may be in breach of legislation or are being requested to provide information by clients and are expected to defend them in court should that eventuality arise.

They are expected to act as an advisory body for organisations or individuals and, as such, should be knowledgable of the related laws in place as well as any proposed legislation. They would inform them of the details of the laws, be it health and safety guidelines or employees rights, and work to identify areas that they may not be in compliance with. If litigation, investigation, or prosecution against a client has commenced, a regulatory lawyer should be the first to inform them, and keep in regular contact with the prosecutor as a means of keeping up-to-date with the progress of the case.

A successful candidate would hold at least an undergraduate degree in a related law topic (usually a four year course). On top of this, regulatory lawyers are expected to have had at least three or fours years experience (although four to six would be ideal) of working in a field that closely relates to regulatory law and regulatory investigation and research. He or she would be willing to develop an extensive knowledge of regulatory compliance and related laws and would be keen to develop strong ties with relevant UK regulatory bodies. Strong research, IT, problem solving and team skills are also essential as well as experience in offering one-to-one practical support and advice to a wide range of individuals and companies.

Qualifications: At least an undergraduate law degree.

Experience: A minimum of three to four years post qualification experience of dealing with regulatory matters and in providing close client support.

Skills: IT skills, problem solving skills, analytical skills, written and verbal communication skills, team work skills, knowledge of related acts, diplomacy and people skills.
